biography

Calvin Hu, currently 21, began piano at the young age of five under Jerri Witt, graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Katja Andy, Maria Clodes, Bela Nagy, and Bernhard Abramowitsch. Hu began studying as a preparatory student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2006 and graduated in 2012.  Recently, Hu has been chosen as one of the participants of the annual Junior Bach Festival 2011,  as well as being placed first in the Music Teacher Association of California Competition (San Francisco Branch). In addition, Hu competedin the prestigious Pacific Musical Society's Piano Competition in 2010, and was awarded second place.  In Spring of 2012, Hu performed Beethoven's  Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, op. 15 with the Lowell High Symphonic Orchestra. Currently, Hu is a student at the University of California, Los Angeles where he is pursuing a double major in piano performance and music education, while minoring in music industry. He is currently studying with Doctor Antoinette Perry, who currently resides both on the UCLA and USC piano faculty.

In addition to solo piano, Hu has an extremely large interest in chamber music. Starting in 2010, Hu was enrolled  in the prestigious chamber music program at SFCM, under the director Doris Fukawa.  Here, Hu collaborated with a variety of ensembles such as string quartets, piano trios, and mixed wind ensembles. His teachers include pianist Richard Rogers, cellist Randolph Fromme, and violinist Aenea Keyes. Most recently, Hu was part of the Cahada Piano Trio, consisting of himself, David Lu on violin, and Hannah Kim on cello. They were one of the groups selected to compete in the 2012 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition Junior Division.



Alongside playing the piano, Hu is also an avid violinist. His last teacher was Roy Oakley, director of Villa Sinfonia, a Bay-area based string orchestra consisting of both professional musicians and young artists. Starting at the age of 9, Hu began immersing himself in both solo, chamber, and orchestral performances. He has attended SFCM's Summer Music West for a number of years, playing both piano and violin, as well as attending Villa Sinfonia's  Zephyr Chamber Music camp for two years.  From 2009-2012, Hu was part of the Vill a Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra and soloed in Spring of 2012 with Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor, op. 64. In addition,  he was concertmaster of the Lowell High Symphonic Orchestra and was the first violinist of the Lowell String Quartet. Past violin teachers have included Gerard Svazlian, leading violinist of the San Francisco Opera House, Yuri Cho, violinist of the esteemed Afiara Quartet, and world-renown professor and pedagogue Daniel Kobialka.

Aside from both piano and violin, Hu is very involved in choral activities.  From 2008-2012, he was the choir pianist and teaching assistant for the choirs at his local high school.  Hu himself being in Lowell High School's Advanced and Chamber Choirs, he actively lead sectionals and was tenor section leader. In the 2009 season, the choir performed at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall under the famous all male a ca pella group, Chanticleer, in their festival entitled "The Singing Life." In the 2012 season,  the choir performed at Carnegie Hall  under the teaching of conductor and composer Eric Whitacre, in the Distinguised Artists International - New York.  Hu hopes to incorporate both choral and string activities in his future musical career.
